RACEGOERS TO INDULGE IN TRUE COAST STYLE AGAIN WHILE life will be no picnic for the runners in the 2006 Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington, it certainly will be for cup day racegoers at the Gold Coast Turf Club. Catering to those who enjoy the feel of grass under their feet, the Turf Club is once again inviting patrons to bring a picnic rug and chairs and enjoy a perfect picnic platter of prawns, oysters, smoked chicken, ham, anti pasto and cheese, bread rolls and a bottle of bubbly. “It’s a concept we introduced last year after our function rooms were sold out months in advance,” said Turf Club Chief Executive, Grant Sheather. “We knew the demand was there for pre-ordered catering right throughout the racecourse, particularly down on the Southern Lawn, but we certainly weren’t expecting the orders to go through the roof like they did. “It seems everyone wants a picnic on Melbourne Cup Day, so we’re happy to oblige,” he said. Mr Sheather said the Turf Club gates will open at 9am to “the traditional atmosphere and excitement we have come to expect on Melbourne Cup Day on the Coast.” “Melbourne Cup Day is one of our largest days of the year and, with another huge crowd expected this year, we have tried to make it more comfortable and the grounds easily accessible for all racegoers. “Just a few weeks ago we announced major security upgrades and our air conditioning, general catering and betting facilities are the best they’ve ever been. “The Fountain Lawn will once again feature fashion parades, the Southport Central Fashions on the Field competitions and live entertainment throughout the afternoon. “Also for the ladies, and gents of course, make-up artists from Napoleon Perdis and Hair stylists from NV Hair Salon at Southport Central will be right in the middle of the action on the Southern Lawn keeping them looking glamorous all day long in the hugely-popular Beauty Precinct,” Mr Sheather said. The Turf Club’s Picnic Platters cost $149, they cater for four people and orders need to be placed through the catering department at the Club no later than Friday 3rd November by telephoning 5538 1599. Each group that pre-order a fabulous platter will also each receive the option to purchase discounted gate entry of $15 per person (normally $20). ENDS.
