Turf Club Cup Day Traffic Plan - Not Traffic Jam

Date Released: Saturday 28th October 2006

A STRATEGIC management plan designed to provide optimum traffic flow around the Gold Coast Turf Club for the Melbourne Cup and other feature racedays has been devised.

It’s the result of a collaborative effort involving club management, Queensland Transport, Queensland Police, Gold Coast City Council, Surfside Buslines and Regent Taxis.

Gold Coast Turf Club Chief Executive, Grant Sheather, says new traffic arrangements - described as the most extensive ever implemented around the Bundall racecourse precinct - will 'increase the flow and ease any traffic strains'.

“The plan involves temporary road closures at all three access roads to the Club,” Mr Sheather said.

“Closures to private vehicles will be established on Racecourse Drive at the intersection with Ken Russell Court (southern access) and Waterford Court (northern access) on Emirates Melbourne Cup Raceday (Tuesday 7th November).

“No private vehicles will be allowed to enter past the Crombie Avenue – Upton Street roundabout or beyond Strathaird Road after 2.00pm.

“The police will re-open the road at approximately 6.30pm depending on the traffic flow.

“Vehicles parked in the car parks of the Turf Club leaving the precinct after 2.00pm will be able to exit with ease and - as per normal racedays - cars leaving the carparks will only be allowed to turn left onto Racecourse Drive,” he said.

Mr Sheather said the idea is to get people to and from the track with minimum delay, with public transport promoted as the best option.

"There will be an increase in public transport available for all budgets and buses, limousines and taxis will have virtually unhindered access all day.

“If people must drive to the racecourse, they need to arrive early.

"We'll have plenty of police on ‘special services duty’ controlling traffic at various points to ensure a smooth traffic flow," he said.
