GCTC Melbourne Cup Celebrations to be huge

Date Released: Saturday 28th October 2006

THE Gold Coast Turf Club’s 2006 Melbourne Cup Raceday will see high fashion meet loud shirts and shorts as Gold Coasters and holidaymakers celebrate ‘the race that stops the nation’ in inimitable style on Tuesday 7th November.

Some 12,500 racegoers are tipped to walk through the Turf Club gates at Bundall to indulge in over nine hours of horse racing, fashion, hospitality and entertainment.

According to Turf Club Chief Executive, Grant Sheather, the Melbourne Cup at the Gold Coast track is ‘without a doubt the next best place to Flemington to watch the race’.

“Melbourne Cup is one of our largest events crowd-wise, second only to January’s Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions feature raceday,” Mr Sheather said.

“It’s a fantastic day, plenty of great fashion where we see ladies in hats and heels and the men in funky suits. Everyone can enjoy the fashion competitions, fashion parades, free entertainment and place a few bets on the big race …it really is the best place to be if you’re not at Flemington.

“This year we’re expecting another huge crowd to cheer with the rest of the nation as they jump from the barriers in one of the world’s truly great thoroughbred races,” he said.

Mr Sheather said the Turf Club is geared up ‘whatever the crowd, whatever the weather’, the club recently announcing a major security upgrade.

And he says, with patron comfort at an all time high, the Southport Central Fashions on the Field competition will be a highlight not to be missed.

“Fashions on the Field entrants must register at the Fashions on the Field Marquee on the Fountain Lawn from 10.30am and the most exquisitely dressed racegoers will take to the runway for the final judging at 1.00pm,” Mr Sheather said.

“The fashions are always fantastic and the ladies and gents always manage to turn plenty of heads on the day.”
