FAVOURITE Mimi Lebrock ($5.30) romped home to win one of the closest Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 2YO Classics at the Gold Coast Turf Club today in front of a record crowd of 18,665.
It was the second victory in the Classic for jockey Hugh Bowman after his breakthrough win on Bradbury’s Luck in 2005 and also for legendary trainer Bart Cummings who trained Malibu Magic to her win in 1989.
And one of the most open Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Classics betting-wise was a hard fought affair.
After Puss ‘N’ Boots and Husson Lightning set the early pace, Bowman pulled his mount two off the rails and made the running over the last 200 metres to take the race by the slender margin of a short neck from Husson Lightning with Royal Asscher a mere long neck further back.
Mimi Lebrock covered the 1200 metre distance on a brilliantly prepared track in a time of 1:09:98
Earlier in the meeting Gold Edition took out the $1million Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 3YO Trophy, giving trainer Toowoomba-based Ron Maund and top jockey Darren Beadman their first Magic Millions victory together.
The Toowomba-based flyer took the honours by a runaway five lengths in the time of 1:21:07 from Grand Reve (Jim Byrne) and luckless third placegetter Sequential Charm (Jason Holder) which finished another length further back.
Red-hot favourite, John Singleton’s Publishing, started well but faded in the straight to finish well out of the placings - despite being urged on in a private room off the Mounting Yard by the flamboyant Magic Millions co-owner and his guest, Hollywood starlet Tara Reid.
Gold Coast Turf Club Chief executive, Grant Sheather, said the Club was understandably ecstatic with today’s event and record turnout.
“Many came to see, and just as many came to be seen, but either way, the record 18,665 crowd who turned out today showed just why this event is clearly Queensland’s premier day of racing.
“Our new traffic and parking arrangements worked a treat, we had plenty of extra tables and chairs on site and, despite it being a blue sky day, patron comfort was very high.
“It was also a very safe day for our crowd with an increased security presence and CCTV cameras keeping a close eye on things,” he said.
Turf Club Chairman, Bill Millican, thanked the Gold Coast community for backing today’s event.
“Although this event now has an obvious global reach, today’s attendance really cemented it as very much a Gold Coast-supported event,” he said.
“While we had a lot of overseas and interstate visitors come through the gates, it was the Gold Coast support that saw us break the crowd attendance record.
“And it was terrific to see Gold Coast horses do so well today, particularly Gillian Heinrich’s stables winning the first and last races of the day,” he said.
Mr Millican, said the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Carnival was the ‘standout performer’ in the new look Queensland Summer Racing Carnival.
“The re-vamped summer racing calendar has proved an outstanding success and we couldn’t be happier,” he said.
And while the stakes were high on the track, they were also up there in the Emirates Fashions on the Field with Contemporary Racewear winner, Brooke Wilmot (21) from Albany Creek in Brisbane winning a $10,000 VIP trip for two to the spectacular Dubai World Cup.
Her stunning black and white ensemble was a popular choice with both the judges and an appreciative crowd.
Her win also made the 2007 Emirates fashions competitions a family affair after her twin sister Kara won a Dubai trip at Wednesday’s Emirates Ladies Day – setting the girls up for their very first overseas trip.
Sydney’s Nicole Cassidy (19) from Sydney wore an Isabella O’Shea hat to take out the Most Fashionable Hat category, while Southport’s Samantha Honeyman donned a stunning silver and grey Monica Silk design to snare the Classic Racewear honours.
The Best Dressed Man on course was Arundel’s Ben Crilly-Hargrave (23) – a primary school physical education teacher and part-time fashion designer who chose a black shirt, pants, braces and a lime tie to catch the judge’s eyes.
