GOLD COAST GOES GREAT GUNS WITH “SHOOT OUT”

by Michelle Christensen

THE John Wallace-trained Shoot Out (High Chaparral – Pentamerous) ridden by Gold Coast jockey Daniel Griffin blew away its rivals in the $275,000 QTC Sires Produce Stakes on Saturday 30 May.

After backing up from its first-start Maiden win at the Gold Coast over 1300 metres on 16 May, the two-year-old reveled in the slow track conditions winning by 1 ¼ lengths over Impulsive Dream to give Gold Coast trainer Wallace a much-needed Group 2 win.

Consigned from Oakland Stud, Shoot Out was bought at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sales for a mere $15,000.

With two wins from two starts Shoot Out has taken his stake earnings to $175,500.

The gelding showed promise when first trialed at the Gold Coast on 28 April, easily winning his 1000 metre two-year-old trial in a time of 59.22.

This time was only .01 of a second slower than the fastest open class trial of the day.

Shoot Out is worked at the Gold Coast training facilities which are considered among the best in the country and attract some of Australia’s leading trainers.

Prominent trainers including David Hayes, Gary Portelli, Paul Messara, Peter Snowden, Allan Denham and Tony Noonan are stabling at the Gold Coast over the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Gold Coast Turf Club Racecourse Manager Steve Andrews says “It’s great to have trainers of such calibre attracted to the Gold Coast. It shows that our training facilities are equal to that of other Southern tracks.

“To emphasize how successful the Gold Coast-trained horses run it’s interesting to note that Gold Coast trainers and Gold Coast visiting trainers won six of the eight races on offer at Eagle Farm on Saturday 30 May,” he said.

Off-track the Gold Coast Turf Club is offering a variety of winter event packages. The Club is set to host a magical Christmas in July event on Saturday 11 July.

The Dome function venue will be transformed into a winter wonderland with the event to feature a sumptuous Christmas buffet and live entertainment from 2pm. The ticket cost of $55 per person includes a complimentary drink on arrival.

For those with a more competitive streak, the Gold Coast Turf Club will host its Annual Corporate Golf & Raceday on Thursday 30 July.

Players can register a team of four or individually. With a shotgun start scheduled for 7.45am at RACV Royal Pines, guests will play a 4-ball Ambrose, followed by an afternoon of racing and a delicious buffet lunch at the Turf Club.

Other major events from the Club’s packed calendar include the Gold Coast City Cup Day on 22nd August with plenty of free family entertainment, AFL Grand Final Day on Saturday 26th September, a High Spring race day on Saturday 10th October and Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3rd November.
