Punters toast 'No Glass' initiative at Gold Coast Turf Club

Date Released: Tuesday 20th October 2009

NEWS RELEASE
PUNTERS TOAST NO GLASS INITIATIVE AT GOLD COAST TURF CLUB

THE public areas of the Gold Coast Turf Club will be a ‘glass free zone’ on this year’s Melbourne Cup day.

The change from glass to plastic cups was introduced two weeks ago without a single complaint from punters.

According to Gold Coast Turf Club Chairman, Hoss Heinrich, the move, which doesn’t apply to the Members or corporate function areas, is one of a number of initiatives designed to ensure the safest possible local Spring Racing Carnival environment.

“We take our duty of care responsibilities very seriously and the change from glass to plastic has already been very well received,” Mr Heinrich said.

“On Melbourne Cup Day our security will be very visible, we have camera surveillance of the entire racecourse and we’ve organised plenty of free shuttle buses to and from all parts of the city,” he said.

Mr Heinrich said ever-growing Saturday crowds and a 4500-plus attendance at Saturday’s Caulfield Cup raceday suggest a bumper roll up on the first Tuesday in November.

“It’s traditionally the second biggest day of the year for us after the Magic Millions Raceday and we’re pulling out all the stops to make it the best ever.

“We’re expecting a very large crowd as we present a full eight-race local program, Fashions on the Field, excellent food and beverage and plenty of entertainment,” he said.
