OVER $100,000 RAISED AT THE INAUGURAL STAR BALL IN SUPPORT OF THE STARLIGHT CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION
THE inaugural 2008 Star Ball Gold Coast gala dinner raised over $100,000 on Saturday 22nd March for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. The Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that relies entirely on the support and generosity of the community. Their aim is to bring happiness to all seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, giving them the opportunity to access and benefit from Starlight’s programs.
The Star Ball is an official Magic Millions event that attracted celebrities from all sporting codes and the racing industry. This will be an ongoing annual event and will form a permanent part of the Magic Millions social calendar.
Almost 400 people attended the Vegas themed black-tie event at the Sheraton Mirage Resort & Spa where they were treated to a star studded line up of entertainment.
A large neon sign typical of Vegas and a picture landmark served as backdrops for the dazzling evening that included live and silent auctions, music, dinner and dancing.
Rob McCasker from Hot Tomato 102.9FM was the Master of Ceremonies with entertainment including Dean Vegas, cover band The Accidents and a headline act of Jon Stevens, front man of the 80’s band Noiseworks and INXS.
Coolmore Australia provided enormous support for the Event through their incredible donation of the first Australian stallion nomination for Danehill Son and Champion Racehorse Dylan Thomas to the Starlight Foundation. The nomination was auctioned off for $60,000 under heavy bidding.
Starlight Chairman Mark Sowerby said the generosity and support of Coolmore made a huge difference to the outcome of the Ball.
“Coolmore’s support of this event was absolutely magnificent and we were thrilled with the donation and the incredible interest in the nomination from broodmare owners. We cannot thank the Magnier family and Coolmore team enough”.
Dylan Thomas’ arrival into Coolmore Australia for the upcoming breeding season has been met with great anticipation by local breeders. A 6-time Group One winner and the best horse Kieren Fallon ever rode, Dylan Thomas is bred on a similar Danehill/Sharpen Up cross as exceptional sire Danehill Dancer. Probably the best horse ever by sire of sires Danehill and a half-brother to the brilliant European Champion 2yo filly Queen's Logic, Dylan Thomas is certain to be a huge hit in Australia. Probably the best horse ever by sire of sires and a half-brother to the brilliant European Champion 2yo filly , Dylan Thomas is certain to be a huge hit in Australia.
The Magic Millions Star Ball will be held again in 2009 on the 8th January, the Thursday night prior to the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Raceday.

Fort 'n' Won Claims a stunning victory in the Emirates Airline Stakes |
| |
Date Released: Monday 15th January 2007 |
| |
Egged on by the deafening roars from the crowd Fort ‘n’ Won gave spectators something to cheer about today after winning the Emirates Airline Stakes at the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Carnival at the Gold Coast Turf Club. Beating stable mates Inthemix and July in the 2,200 metre Stakes, Fort ’n’ Won left its competition in its tracks to rightfully claim the $50,000 prize purse. As part of the Emirates Ladies Day action, Emirates’ Mike Simon, Divisional Senior Vice President Corporate Communications was on hand to award owners Sean Darcy, Jockey Brad Stewart and trainer Gerald Ryan their trophies. Mike Simon said the atmosphere and electric excitement surrounding the Gold Coast and the Magic Millions rivalled many of the horse racing events around the world. He said: “We are proud to partner with the Gold Coast Turf Club and in these last three years of our involvement with the Magic Millions Carnival, we have seen the event growing in stature on the world stage and earn its stripes as a premier race meeting. 2007 marks Emirates’ fourth year of service in Brisbane and we want a major platform such as this one to say a big thank you to Queenslanders for their unstinting hospitality and support.” This year’s Magic Millions Carnival is the third consecutive year that Emirates Airline has sponsored several events, both on and off the track, as part of their sponsorship with the Gold Coast Turf Club. In addition to the outstanding day at the track, Emirates Airline also sponsored six other races including the Emirates SkyCargo Cup, The Skywards Plate, The Emirates Airline Challenge, Emirates Group Classic, Emirates Airline Handicap, and The Emirates Holidays Handicap. With their reputation for exclusive trackside functions, Emirates invited a select group of guests to attend a VIP event in the Dome, overlooking the racing action. Another major drawcard on the day was the colourful Emirates Airline Fashions on the Field that showcased the day’s finest off track competition. The lucky winner of the highly competitive Most Contemporary Racewear category, Kara Wilmot from Albany Creek, received two business class return airfares flying Emirates to Dubai. The prize package for claiming the Emirates Airline Fashions on the Field crown is valued at A$5,000. Fashionistas intending to compete at the Magic Millions Raceday this Saturday can enter the Emirates Airline Fashions on the Field from around 10.30am at the Fashions on the Field marquee, which will be situated at the beauty precinct lawn located to the left of the main turnstyle. Mimi Lebrock takes the spoils in the 2007 Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 2YO Classic |
| |
Date Released: Monday 15th January 2007 |
| |
FAVOURITE Mimi Lebrock ($5.30) romped home to win one of the closest Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 2YO Classics at the Gold Coast Turf Club today in front of a record crowd of 18,665.
It was the second victory in the Classic for jockey Hugh Bowman after his breakthrough win on Bradbury’s Luck in 2005 and also for legendary trainer Bart Cummings who trained Malibu Magic to her win in 1989.
And one of the most open Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Classics betting-wise was a hard fought affair.
After Puss ‘N’ Boots and Husson Lightning set the early pace, Bowman pulled his mount two off the rails and made the running over the last 200 metres to take the race by the slender margin of a short neck from Husson Lightning with Royal Asscher a mere long neck further back.
Mimi Lebrock covered the 1200 metre distance on a brilliantly prepared track in a time of 1:09:98
Earlier in the meeting Gold Edition took out the $1million Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 3YO Trophy, giving trainer Toowoomba-based Ron Maund and top jockey Darren Beadman their first Magic Millions victory together.
The Toowomba-based flyer took the honours by a runaway five lengths in the time of 1:21:07 from Grand Reve (Jim Byrne) and luckless third placegetter Sequential Charm (Jason Holder) which finished another length further back.
Red-hot favourite, John Singleton’s Publishing, started well but faded in the straight to finish well out of the placings - despite being urged on in a private room off the Mounting Yard by the flamboyant Magic Millions co-owner and his guest, Hollywood starlet Tara Reid.
Gold Coast Turf Club Chief executive, Grant Sheather, said the Club was understandably ecstatic with today’s event and record turnout.
“Many came to see, and just as many came to be seen, but either way, the record 18,665 crowd who turned out today showed just why this event is clearly Queensland’s premier day of racing.
“Our new traffic and parking arrangements worked a treat, we had plenty of extra tables and chairs on site and, despite it being a blue sky day, patron comfort was very high.
“It was also a very safe day for our crowd with an increased security presence and CCTV cameras keeping a close eye on things,” he said.
Turf Club Chairman, Bill Millican, thanked the Gold Coast community for backing today’s event.
“Although this event now has an obvious global reach, today’s attendance really cemented it as very much a Gold Coast-supported event,” he said.
“While we had a lot of overseas and interstate visitors come through the gates, it was the Gold Coast support that saw us break the crowd attendance record.
“And it was terrific to see Gold Coast horses do so well today, particularly Gillian Heinrich’s stables winning the first and last races of the day,” he said.
Mr Millican, said the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Carnival was the ‘standout performer’ in the new look Queensland Summer Racing Carnival.
“The re-vamped summer racing calendar has proved an outstanding success and we couldn’t be happier,” he said.
And while the stakes were high on the track, they were also up there in the Emirates Fashions on the Field with Contemporary Racewear winner, Brooke Wilmot (21) from Albany Creek in Brisbane winning a $10,000 VIP trip for two to the spectacular Dubai World Cup.
Her stunning black and white ensemble was a popular choice with both the judges and an appreciative crowd.
Her win also made the 2007 Emirates fashions competitions a family affair after her twin sister Kara won a Dubai trip at Wednesday’s Emirates Ladies Day – setting the girls up for their very first overseas trip.
Sydney’s Nicole Cassidy (19) from Sydney wore an Isabella O’Shea hat to take out the Most Fashionable Hat category, while Southport’s Samantha Honeyman donned a stunning silver and grey Monica Silk design to snare the Classic Racewear honours.
The Best Dressed Man on course was Arundel’s Ben Crilly-Hargrave (23) – a primary school physical education teacher and part-time fashion designer who chose a black shirt, pants, braces and a lime tie to catch the judge’s eyes.

Turf Club Magic Millions On Site parking will be at a premium |
| |
Date Released: Thursday 21st December 2006 |
| |
PARKING at the Gold Coast Turf Club on the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions feature raceday (13th January) will be at a premium Club officials have warned.
The Club want people to seriously consider public transport as their preferred method of getting to and from the track.
Earlier this week details were released outlining temporary private vehicle traffic changes – a masterplan devised by Club management, Queensland Transport, Queensland Police, Gold Coast City Council, Surfside Buslines and Regent Taxis.
But they say leaving the car keys behind and jumping in a train, bus or taxi is the best way to be a winner on the day.
Gold Coast Turf Club Chief Executive, Grant Sheather, says extra buses from Nerang Rail, Paradise Point and Tweed Heads will run on the day, as well as free Shuttles to Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise after the races.
“Parking around the track itself is very much at a premium this year, so we’re asking people to consider alternatives to trying to drive right to the front gate,” Mr Sheather said.
“We’ve arranged to use the Gold Coast City Council Evandale Administration Centre carpark on Bundall road for parking and free shuttle bus pick up and drop off during the day, so people who are unable to catch a bus or a taxi at least have that alternative,” he said.
Mr Sheather said the traffic changes involve temporary road closures at all three access roads to the Club.
“Closures to private vehicles will be established on Racecourse Drive at the intersection with Ken Russell Court (southern access) and Waterford Court (northern access).
“No private vehicles will be allowed to enter past the Crombie Avenue – Upton Street roundabout, Ken Russell Court or Waterford Court after 2.00pm.
“The police will re-open the road at approximately 6.30pm depending on the traffic flow.
“Vehicles parked in the car parks of the Turf Club leaving the precinct after 2.00pm will be able to exit with ease and - as per normal racedays - cars leaving the carparks will only be allowed to turn left onto Racecourse Drive.
"There will be an increase in public transport available for all budgets and buses, limousines and taxis will have virtually unhindered access all day.
“If people must drive to the racecourse, they need to arrive early.
"We'll have plenty of police on ‘special services duty’ controlling traffic at various points to ensure a smooth traffic flow," he said.

Heels kicked up Flemington Style at the Gold Coast Turf Club |
| |
Date Released: Wednesday 8th November 2006 |
| |
THE heels were kicking up on and off the track at today’s spectacular 2006 Emirates Melbourne Cup meeting at the Gold Coast Turf Club.
While the unfancied Japanese runner Delta Blues raised the roof at Flemington, high fashion dominated the function rooms, marquees and lawns of Queensland’s premier thoroughbred racing club.
A record crowd of 13,057 filed through the gates to take in all the excitement of the time-honoured Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival feature event and a full eight race program of local racing.
"We had some spectacular weather, incredible racing and a truly sensational Melbourne Cup event," said Gold Coast Turf Club Chief Executive, Grant Sheather.
"The crowds arrived early and there was a fantastic atmosphere right around the racecourse right from the start.
"Our decision to increase the family content of the day, beef up security and implement our most comprehensive traffic plan ever really paid dividends as I don't think we have ever seen a better behaved Melbourne Cup crowd ever.
"It’s been absolutely magnificent," he said.
The traffic plan was the result of a collaborative effort involving club management, Queensland Transport, Queensland Police, Gold Coast City Council, Surfside Buslines and Regent Taxis, while the increased security involved the installation of a number of CCTV cameras around the racecourse.
In the $6000 Southport Central Fashions on the Field, today’s Most Contemporary Racewear winner Penny Lemonis from Runaway Bay took away a fabulous Golden Slipper Tour - return airfares, accommodation, transfers and ticketing to the Golden Slipper courtesy of Ambassador Travel.
Penny also took away a prize pack valued at over $2000.
Robina’s Ingrid Frincu was the Most Classic Racewear winner – Ingrid also scoring a fabulous prize pack, as did Biljana Kostouski whose inventive creation saw her crowned the wearer of the Most Fashionable Hat.
Keeping the flag flying for Robina and the blokes on-course was today’s Best Dressed Male, Ryan Milligan.

Turf Club Cup Day Traffic Plan - Not Traffic Jam |
| |
Date Released: Saturday 28th October 2006 |
| |
A STRATEGIC management plan designed to provide optimum traffic flow around the Gold Coast Turf Club for the Melbourne Cup and other feature racedays has been devised.
It’s the result of a collaborative effort involving club management, Queensland Transport, Queensland Police, Gold Coast City Council, Surfside Buslines and Regent Taxis.
Gold Coast Turf Club Chief Executive, Grant Sheather, says new traffic arrangements - described as the most extensive ever implemented around the Bundall racecourse precinct - will 'increase the flow and ease any traffic strains'.
“The plan involves temporary road closures at all three access roads to the Club,” Mr Sheather said.
“Closures to private vehicles will be established on Racecourse Drive at the intersection with Ken Russell Court (southern access) and Waterford Court (northern access) on Emirates Melbourne Cup Raceday (Tuesday 7th November).
“No private vehicles will be allowed to enter past the Crombie Avenue – Upton Street roundabout or beyond Strathaird Road after 2.00pm.
“The police will re-open the road at approximately 6.30pm depending on the traffic flow.
“Vehicles parked in the car parks of the Turf Club leaving the precinct after 2.00pm will be able to exit with ease and - as per normal racedays - cars leaving the carparks will only be allowed to turn left onto Racecourse Drive,” he said.
Mr Sheather said the idea is to get people to and from the track with minimum delay, with public transport promoted as the best option.

THE Gold Coast Turf Club’s 2006 Melbourne Cup Raceday will see high fashion meet loud shirts and shorts as Gold Coasters and holidaymakers celebrate ‘the race that stops the nation’ in inimitable style on Tuesday 7th November.
Some 12,500 racegoers are tipped to walk through the Turf Club gates at Bundall to indulge in over nine hours of horse racing, fashion, hospitality and entertainment.
According to Turf Club Chief Executive, Grant Sheather, the Melbourne Cup at the Gold Coast track is ‘without a doubt the next best place to Flemington to watch the race’.
“Melbourne Cup is one of our largest events crowd-wise, second only to January’s Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions feature raceday,” Mr Sheather said.
“It’s a fantastic day, plenty of great fashion where we see ladies in hats and heels and the men in funky suits. Everyone can enjoy the fashion competitions, fashion parades, free entertainment and place a few bets on the big race …it really is the best place to be if you’re not at Flemington.
“This year we’re expecting another huge crowd to cheer with the rest of the nation as they jump from the barriers in one of the world’s truly great thoroughbred races,” he said.
Mr Sheather said the Turf Club is geared up ‘whatever the crowd, whatever the weather’, the club recently announcing a major security upgrade.
And he says, with patron comfort at an all time high, the Southport Central Fashions on the Field competition will be a highlight not to be missed.
“Fashions on the Field entrants must register at the Fashions on the Field Marquee on the Fountain Lawn from 10.30am and the most exquisitely dressed racegoers will take to the runway for the final judging at 1.00pm,” Mr Sheather said.
“The fashions are always fantastic and the ladies and gents always manage to turn plenty of heads on the day.”

Other on-course entertainment includes the Ganz Trio on the Southern Lawn. They’ll commence after the Melbourne Cup is run and won.
The ever-popular Fashion Police and plenty of other roving entertainment will also entertain throughout the day.

Public bars open at 9:00am, full bookmaker and TAB facilities will operate on the day and a big screen will be set up on the infield of the track.

A third courtesy bus will depart at 11.00am from the Burleigh Heads bus stop, outside the Primary School, stopping at various points along the Gold Coast Highway to Surfers Paradise as well as the recently introduced Northern courtesy bus picking up patrons from Paradise Point all the way down the highway to the Club from 11am.

Picnic Cup day atmosphere at Turf Club |
| |
Date Released: Thursday 26th October 2006 |
| |
RACEGOERS TO INDULGE IN TRUE COAST STYLE AGAIN WHILE life will be no picnic for the runners in the 2006 Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington, it certainly will be for cup day racegoers at the Gold Coast Turf Club. Catering to those who enjoy the feel of grass under their feet, the Turf Club is once again inviting patrons to bring a picnic rug and chairs and enjoy a perfect picnic platter of prawns, oysters, smoked chicken, ham, anti pasto and cheese, bread rolls and a bottle of bubbly. “It’s a concept we introduced last year after our function rooms were sold out months in advance,” said Turf Club Chief Executive, Grant Sheather. “We knew the demand was there for pre-ordered catering right throughout the racecourse, particularly down on the Southern Lawn, but we certainly weren’t expecting the orders to go through the roof like they did. “It seems everyone wants a picnic on Melbourne Cup Day, so we’re happy to oblige,” he said. Mr Sheather said the Turf Club gates will open at 9am to “the traditional atmosphere and excitement we have come to expect on Melbourne Cup Day on the Coast.” “Melbourne Cup Day is one of our largest days of the year and, with another huge crowd expected this year, we have tried to make it more comfortable and the grounds easily accessible for all racegoers. “Just a few weeks ago we announced major security upgrades and our air conditioning, general catering and betting facilities are the best they’ve ever been. “The Fountain Lawn will once again feature fashion parades, the Southport Central Fashions on the Field competitions and live entertainment throughout the afternoon. “Also for the ladies, and gents of course, make-up artists from Napoleon Perdis and Hair stylists from NV Hair Salon at Southport Central will be right in the middle of the action on the Southern Lawn keeping them looking glamorous all day long in the hugely-popular Beauty Precinct,” Mr Sheather said. The Turf Club’s Picnic Platters cost $149, they cater for four people and orders need to be placed through the catering department at the Club no later than Friday 3rd November by telephoning 5538 1599. Each group that pre-order a fabulous platter will also each receive the option to purchase discounted gate entry of $15 per person (normally $20). ENDS.
